Imperial College London | MS in Economics and Strategy for Business | Important Skills
What skills do you think are important in the career that interests you, how would you demonstrate that you have been developing these skills so far? (300 words)
I think the analytical ability, the communicative skill, problem-solving and the international perspective are key elements of being an excellent manager, and I have been concentrating on developing these skills. First, through the rigorous training in my academic coursework in college, I have been constructing the solid foundation in economics and business analysis. For example, in my Security Investment Analysis class, I took on an in-depth research on different industries. Since then, I have been capable of organizing information gathered from databases, explaining how technology is applied in innovation and depicting the specialties of each brand; in my international finance course, I have learnt analyzing how different monetary policies work in reality, predicting the results of changes in foreign exchange rates and interest rates. While working in Bank of Taiwan, I was demanded to promote a fixed amount of financial commodities to customers, and I realized that the key point of being a successful seller is empathy. Although professional knowledge is important, understanding what the customers need can win their trust. This work experience effectively cultivates my diplomatic personality and communicative skills. Another critical skill toward business is problem-solving. When I was in KPMG and Bank of Taiwan, every day I confronted so many arduous tasks from my boss and clients, such as coming up with possible manners to minimize the clients’ tax obligations and satisfying customers’ conundrums. These skills are really valuable for managers. Furthermore, deeply fascinated by the exotic culture, I have been traveling to numerous countries to broaden my perspective, and I hope to sharpen my international eyesight through your prestigious MS program.
